Developmental Environments
A child’s developmental environment plays a critical role in shaping development and lifelong health. It is composed of the full range of experiences and exposures that children have in the places where they live, learn, play, and grow.
The Center's Early Childhood Scientific Council on Equity and the Environment (ECSCEE) aims to leverage both science and community-informed perspectives to shed light on ways that we can improve children’s developmental environments to support healthy development. In January 2024, the ECSCEE released its first paper: Extreme Heat Affects Early Childhood Development and Health. Recognizing that temperatures are rising around the world, this paper details how extreme heat affects infants and young children more than most adults, as well as ways that policymakers and community leaders can reduce children's exposure to extreme heat.

The core concepts we’ve followed for years include: 1. the impact of early experiences on brain architecture; 2. the importance of serve and return interactions for healthy development; and 3. the disruptive effects of toxic stress on the developing ...

One way to understand the development of resilience is to visualize a balance scale or seesaw. Protective experiences and coping skills on one side counterbalance significant adversity on the other. Resilience is evident when a child’s health and development tips toward positive outcomes - even when a heavy load of factors is stacked on the negative outcome side. By working together across sect...

Thank you for your always excellent content. As a forest school leader and outdoor learning and play consultant, I am very interested in the role of self-directed free play, mastery experiences, and the value of risk-taking in play as a means for children to develop resilience. Are you aware of any research related to this?

The parents with children coming over our border illegally first start the stress to a child. The child can also sense the parents stress and it affects them. Leave Trump out of it unless you choose to sponsor and support an illegal alien.

This is why the cult of the leftists groom children young and teach them to believe their sexual orientation will from now on be their chosen gender. The left changed the word gender to mean sexual orientation in order to erase biology and replace it with a cult belief. They know the earlier they get the belief into a kids mind the greater likelihood of success. ur English language we have multiple words for the same thing. Many of these words used are often a representation of formal and informal words. Each depending on where you use the word. For example. Automobile and car mean the same thing. The formal word automobile. The informal word car. We use the informal word car in casual conversation ..we say “I have to bring my car for and oil change” We don’t say “ I’m bringing my automobile for an oil change.” The same thing exists for ‘sex’ and ‘gender’ Sex is formal used in documentation where we can see the document listing a place to select our sex and Gender is the informal word used in casual conversation such as I heard John and Jessica had a baby, do you know what gender it is? But something went wrong. A corrupt group of people intentionality changed the word gender and many don’t seem to notice, but I did. People know something was very wrong but couldn’t put their finger on it. I’m here to tell you the skinny. The word gender wasn’t changed by officials or for good reason, it’s been taken and it’s been stolen by the corrupted people. , let me explain .. The meaning of the word has been intentionally changed just for their self centered and corrupt ideology with no rights to change it. This ideology set their own agenda to change the word’s meaning to fit their self serving purpose. Otherwise their transgender movement designed to change society could not exist. All for one word. Let me further explain The word gender according to the ideology is now supposed to mean sexual orientation. But they will never say that. They never will say that. If they did then normal people would say “Well why don’t you just say sexual orientation if you mean sexual orientation?” They don’t because they need to erase two genders, and for very good reason. They need to ascertain society is corrupted and needs correcting when in fact they are morally corrupt. They need to ascertain society is doing harm to children but it’s them doing the harm. Changing the word accomplishes a shift in social norms from normal to their corrupt one. They need to get access to young kids with administrative and parental approval. They need to be allowed into your kid’s heads. A shift in the word means a shift in culture overnight and without a fight, When these people are allowed to talk to your children to they then offer to children choice of 100+ genders instead of only two. They tell children, gender at birth is wrong in many cases. They are from the government and they are here to help. They teach children what each and all their genders are. Which are actually sexual orientations. Then they convince the children to search their inner feelings to decide their gender, confusing some, misleading others. They changed the real meaning of the word with intention to accomplish their task. Get into your kid’s heads and fill it with their corrupt ideology. A real example of the truth is this, a male ( which is gender) can be gay ( which is sexual orientation) These are real and described as such perfectly in dictionaries. Sex and gender are two words with the same meaning. Depending on your formal or informal need is when to properly use each. But, Unfortunately the left stole it. How? The left has large reach to impressionable bleeding heart liberals, people have been lied to and meaning changed. So much was accomplished with one swoop of a word change. They manipulated everyone to believe gay and other all other sexual orientations are gender. But those are sexual orientations NOT gender. The changing of the meaning of the word has been going on with little fight until now. All we need to do is call out the lie and expose it for all to see. Trying to talk directly to the ideological left about their immoral change often becomes an argument and the winner of the argument usually going to the left ideology because their argument becomes absurd rendering it inarguable as if arguing with a child or somebody with Alzheimer’s or somebody in a cult. .. In fact the word gender was hijacked with help from much of media, academia, Hollywood, Television and just about every source of left ideology including all talk shows news outlets and the list goes on. A well thought out choice of words to take back the word and it’s meaning has not been thought out and written until now.. here in this comment is language for you to use for fighting back. When you clicked this comment, you changed the meaning back to its original meaning. You have this language now, to use to your benefit and to make your argument win where ever you use these laid out facts. People like us who don’t agree with their intentional wrongful change know there are two genders with the rare exception of people born intersex. We have words now and have a voice. WE ARE HERE! Yell these facts out loud when necessary. The warped and incorrect use of the word is denounced today, now and in the strongest way possible. Words of truth prevail. People like me and like you woke up to the mass psychosis. We are standing up. We stood up. We are United. Any conversation or debate to speak of this injustice was snuffed out in the past by passive aggressive and intentional attempts by the left to confuse the conversations. This is no longer an issue. These words written here are true, and time is up for their theft. They are all done! The word is now reverted back to meaning two genders because your are declaring it now, declaring it LOUD and CLEAR. Any person, politician, group or ideology will face the shout down of truth written in this letter. We have the last word. … F you! You stole the word! This is NOT out of line. This is true!

This is a GREAT video. Especially for those of you that think babies & children should just “cry it out” &/or cry themselves to sleep every night…. The crying/screaming of a baby is HOW they communicate that they’re in DISTRESS or IN NEED of something (hungry, dirty diaper, hurt…) & In my strong opinion, that “strategy” is simply just lazy-parenting. Babies & children need a lot of nurturing to thrive & survive.

A few days ago, during my professor's lecture, I learned that infants have more neurons than adults. Later, an explanation was given as to why adults have superior cognitive abilities compared to infants (due to stronger neural connections in adults). It was also mentioned that unused neurons gradually disappear. However, I became curious about the more precise reasons behind the decrease in the number of neurons as we grow. In that regard, this video was extremely helpful to me. Neurons that are not used for a long time have weakened connections, and infant neurons are inherently weakly connected. During this process, neuron connections are lost, leading to a reduction in the number of neuron connections. I am deeply grateful.
